A llllllloooooonnnnnnngggggg winter's nap

January 31 - February 6

Oh jeez. It's 4 o'clock on Thursday afternoon and I just realized it's Thursday. That's the kind of week of had. Sorry about the delay. Now to what I had originally meant to post...

Wow. Nothing feels as good as doing a job well, seeing it through to its successful finish and then STOPPING! And, slacker that I really and truly want to be, I think it's the stopping that feels the best. WHEW! Sleep is my friend. All I have planned now is to sleep, practice my bassoon, sleep, do the sound design for ACC's production of Betty's Summer Vacation, sleep, catch a nap or two, sleep... aaaahhhhhhh. Between naps, let's see if I can't make this week's list a little more comprehensive than last week's.

And for your viewing pleasure, here's a sleepy little video of a sleepy little song that I love more than any song ever. I mean, like, totally EVER.

Stressed & sleep deprived

January 24-30

This week's list may be -- no, it IS -- a little sparse. I have a HUGE project at work that has taken FAR more than the 20 hours a week I'm being paid for. Not to mention getting ready for Frontera this weekend. And a grandbaby who has been in the hospital this week with a nasty case of erysipelas (the form of strep that attacks the skin and is known as the 'flesh eating bacteria' if it goes below the dermis, which in his case it has not done, thank goodness). And God only knows what else. Suffice it to say I'm operating on a stress surplus and a sleep deficit.

So I'll do what I can, but it's sketchy at best. I'm looking forward to a better week next week. If nothing else, I've at least got a great dance video for you to enjoy.

Going, going, gone

January 17-23

What the bleep! January is already half gone! Where? Where the hell did it go? I was using it!!!!!

Using it to prepare for a huge symposium at work, using it to get my lip and my lungs back so I can play the bassoon with my musician pals, using it to help Steve get his show ready for Frontera Fest. Using it, using it, using it! And now it's almost gone. Dang!

As you probably know, Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday was day before yesterday, and if you're lucky like me, you'll get the day off to celebrate it on Monday. Someone sent me this video, honoring the legacy of Dr. King, and I thought it was absolutely lovely, so I'm going to share it with you. Enjoy.

I am the Once and Future Bassoonist!!!!!!! Hear me roar!

January 10-16

Ooh! Ooh! Had a HUGE, we're talking MEGA-breakthrough on the bassoon a few nights ago and I am kicking ass now. OK, so I'm not ready to audition for the symphony just yet, but by damn, I can play that puppy! There is still much to be worked on: embouchure (isn't that a great word?), articulation, breath control, nuance, intonation, pitch, technique. You know. All the stuff a musician has to conquer.

I'm hoping one of these days I'll be good enough to be part of the prestigious competition featured in this week's video. Give it to me straight... do you think I stand a chance?

2008 is gonna be GREAT!

January 3-9

Happy new year, everybody. Hope 2008 is getting off to a good start for you. My very first act of the year, like at 12:01:47 am, was to fall off a merry go round in the dark, landing on my ass and finding it as funny as if, well, as if I'd been enjoying some funny stuff. Which I hadn't. Unless you think too much chocolate is funny.

I chose to accept that as a sign, a portent, of how 2008 is going to be for me: I try something. I assess the outcome. I laugh. I have fun. Yup, it's going to be a good year.

Several projects in the works already: I'm writing music for Steve Barney's new play "Preparing for Arrival and Cross Check" which goes up as part of the Frontera Long Fringe on Jan 25; I'm doing another sound design project for ACC's theater department for "Betty's Summer Vacation" which opens Feb 22. I'm writing a poem for a contest. The theme is "Rocky Horror Show at a Monastery." That should be interesting. AND....

And...

And... I bought a bassoon, and I'm re-learning how to play it. For someone who was once good enough to score a scholarship to study bassoon at college, I sure am a bad player now! A friend asked me the other night if I could get any noise out of it at all. Well, DUH. Noise is no problem. But music is another story altogether. Nevertheless, I did play a Christmas concert for Mr. Ben and he even recognized the song I was playing ('Jingle Bells'). So there's hope.

Let's start the new year with a giggle, OK? Here's something that should put a smile on your face:

Frontera Fest
Various times/various venues
Last year, after four consecutive years participating in Frontera, I decided to give it a break. Of course I did not. So this year, after FIVE years in a row, I decided that this time I really mean it. NOT. I'm writing music for Steve Barney's new play "Prepare for Arrival and Cross Check" which will open at the Blue Theatre as part of the long fringe on Jan 25. So come see it for sure, for sure! Or check out the short fringe at the Hyde Park Theatre -- 5 short plays per night, different every night!

see ya on the dance floor,

chris
